Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for 4th and 5th graders at Douglass. The purpose is to encourage students to read good books and have fun while doing it. Students will read from a pre-selected list of books . They should keep a summary of each book they read with title, author, setting, main characters, and main idea of the book.
In February, students that have read a sufficient number of books will be eligible to be on a team. These students will also have the opportunity to practice for the "Battle", discuss authors, share favorite passages, work on vocabulary and other book related events.
The "Battle" will take place in in the spring. Students earn points by answering questions about the books.
Below are the clubs and after school activities available for students.
After School Chorus:
The chorus is offered to students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Students in chorus experience a different level of music reading, analysis, and performance. They perform as a group at the winter concert, as well with their 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade classes. There is NO limit to this group!
Students in the 4th and 5th grade chorus may audition for a chance to participate in Rockingham's All County Chorus, normally held in March. Students who participate have the chance to perform with 150 students from elementary schools in our county. This experience of learning and singing in a large choir can be very valuable for students.
All 5th graders (with good behavior in music class) may come to play the ukulele on Wednesdays from 3:00-3:30. These classes will begin April 15th through May 20th. This is an extra group for those who want the challenge of playing songs that are more difficult. There is a limit of 25.
