AlertNow Message: Sept. 24, 2023

Good evening students and parents,

This is Lauryn Duncan, Principal at Douglass Elementary School calling with a few announcements for the week.

Progress reports will be sent home with your child this week. Please be sure to look over your child’s academic success.

Parents, Thursday, September 28 is an early release day. Students will be dismissed two hours early at 12:45pm. If your child is a car rider please be sure that their ride is here at 12:45 pm. Also, Friday, September 29 is a teacher workday. There will be no school for students.

Our Book Fair will reopen Monday, September 25 and will remain open throughout the week. Information about the Book Fair including how to set up an eWallet went home last week with your child. The Book Fair will close this Thursday, September 28.

Parents, please remember that per board policy there should be no tobacco use on campus. This includes the car rider line in the mornings and afternoons.

To ensure the safety of all students and parents, it is important for everyone to park in a parking space each morning and each afternoon when dropping off and picking up students. When our driveway is blocked it makes it very difficult for parents to walk their children through the parking lot when cars in the driveway block their view of other cars driving. It also makes it very difficult for cars that are parked, to back out of their space. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter as we all work towards keeping our students, staff and parents safe.

Also, it is extremely important that during morning drop off and afternoon dismissal you remain in the right lane for the duration of drop off and pick up. It is not permissible to pass cars using the right hand lane as students enter and exit vehicles. Again, this is to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Please remember that Rockingham County Schools will continue to require approved background checks for any chaperone or volunteer within our school that has unsupervised contact with students. All background checks are handled online, including payment, no money is sent to school. More information about background checks can be found on our district’s website under the parents & students tab. On this page you will find a section titled “Volunteer Resources.” Please click on the links located in this section to learn about the background check process. This information is important as most of our grade levels have field trips scheduled during the fall semester.

Douglass Elementary PTO would like to invite all families to the Roll-A-Bout in Eden on Tuesday, September 26 from 5:30-7:30 pm for our School Spirit Skate Night! Don’t forget to dress in your Douglass attire. Please remember that this is not a drop off event and an adult must accompany any student attending Skate Night.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who participated in our candy bar fundraiser. Thank you to everyone who has turned in any outstanding candy money. We still have not received some payments for boxes of chocolate. Please know that all money helps support our students and their learning. If you have not turned in your candy money, please do that this week.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your evening and we look forward to seeing you bright and early tomorrow morning.

Lauryn Duncan
