Good evening students and parents,

This is Lauryn Duncan, Principal at Douglass Elementary School calling with a few announcements for the week.

The Spring Book Fair is coming! It will be open Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 8. The schedule for when students can make purchases has gone out to classroom teachers. We invite families to shop at the Book Fair together on Thursday, March 7, from 4:30-6:30 pm. We will also be hosting a Family Game Night at that time with lots of fun prizes. The games are free to play and great for parents to join in.

Read Across America week is also March 4-8. We invite students to dress up each day to show a love for reading. The schedule of dress-up days will be posted on Class Dojo, Facebook, and the school website this week. We can’t wait to see your reading spirit!

Please remember that Rockingham County Schools will continue to require approved background checks for any chaperone or volunteer within our school that has unsupervised contact with students. All background checks are handled online, including payment, no money is sent to school. More information about background checks can be found on our district’s website under the parents & students tab. On this page you will find a section titled “Volunteer Resources.” Please click on the links located in this section to learn about the background check process. This information is important as most of our grade levels have field trips scheduled during the spring semester.

Parents, if you have a rising kindergartener please join us on March 19 at Douglass Elementary beginning at 6:00 for a kindergarten 101 session. Mrs. June Nealy will present important information to parents of rising kindergarteners. Please remember that your child must turn 5 on or after August 31.

Douglass Elementary school is excited to participate in the Catch the Reading Bug event. Catch the Reading Bug is Saturday, March 9 at Rockingham County Middle school from 9:00-2:00. “Douglass Elementary’s table will include an activity around the book We Don’t Lose Our Class Goldfish.” We look forward to seeing all of our Douglass families and students at RCMS next Saturday!

I would like to thank everyone that participated in our candy bar fundraiser in September. Thank you to everyone who has turned in any outstanding candy money. We still have not received payment for 11 boxes of chocolate which means we still have a $660 outstanding balance. That’s a considerable amount of money that we could really use to support our students and their learning. If you have not turned in your candy money, please do that this week.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your evening and we look forward to seeing you bright and early tomorrow morning.

Lauryn
