AlertNow Message: December 4, 2022

Hello, students and parents!

This is Lauryn Duncan, Principal at Douglass Elementary School calling with a few announcements for the week.

Parents, our school’s canned food drive, sponsored by our Functional Skills classes, will continue this week. Each class will collect as many canned food items as possible. All donated items must be turned in by December 13th. The class who collects the most items will receive a small prize. We appreciate your help and support with this event.

Parents, please remember that per board policy there should be no tobacco use on campus. This includes the car rider line in the mornings and afternoons.

A remote learning letter and packet will be sent home with your child on Friday. Please be sure to read the letter as it specifies when your child needs to complete the attached assignments. Your child does not need to complete the assignments attached unless we have winter weather and a message from our district indicates a remote learning day.

Please remember that Rockingham County Schools will continue to require approved background checks for any chaperone or volunteer within our school that has unsupervised contact with students. All background checks are handled online, including payment, no money is sent to school. More information about background checks can be found on our district’s website under the parents & students tab. On this page you will find a section titled “Volunteer Resources.” Please click on the links located in this section to learn about the background check process.

Parents, we would like to invite all of our students to participate in dressing up as we celebrate the 10 days before Winter Break. We ask that your child show off their best holiday bling on Monday, bundle up in their favorite scarf on Tuesday, get decked out in their favorite holiday shirt or sweater on Wednesday, wear their favorite flannel on Thursday and wear green on Friday for Grinch Day. A calendar of these days was sent through dojo last week and will be reposted this week.

Please remember that our 3rd graders will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test this week. Testing is scheduled to begin promptly at 8:30 am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. Please be sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and arrives at school on time.

Parents, we would like to invite you to our Title 1 Mad Science Parent Night this Thursday. A fun presentation by a “mad scientist” will take place in the gym from 6:00-7:00pm. Our PTO will also be offering a preview of the Christmas store this Thursday from 5:00-6:00pm. Please know that our PTO will open the Christmas Store each day until December 16th. Information about the Christmas Store will be sent home with your child this week. An invitation about Mad Science Night was sent home with your child last week. Please be sure to turn in the bottom portion of the invitation by December 7th to your child’s teacher in order for us to plan accordingly.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your week and we look forward to seeing you bright and early in the morning.
